A team of scientists from Rice University has proposed a new recipe for concrete. It differs from the classical formulation in that sand is replaced by graphene. This approach allows not only to reduce sand consumption, but also improves the quality of ready-mix concrete, making it stronger, more durable and lighter. The study was conducted in James Tour’s laboratory, where graphene has been produced using flash joule heating technology for several decades.

Its essence is to rapidly superheat the carbon-rich base material with an electric current. As a result, “graphene flakes” are formed. During a recent experiment, graphene was obtained from metallurgical coke, which is a toxic waste product of industrial production. P. Advinkula, one of the authors of the scientific work, believes that the substance obtained during the experiments can successfully replace the traditional filler for concrete, which is sand. Moreover, the resulting concrete is superior to traditional concrete in a number of ways.

Ilon Musk, founder of Neuralink, has reported the first successful application of brain-machine technology on a living person. According to him, the brain implant surgery was successful, and now the patient is undergoing rehabilitation. This is still an experimental technology, which at this stage has no practical use, but is extremely necessary to work out the elements of the new interface.

A special robot R1 installed the N1 chip into the human brain. The chip has the dimensions of a coin and is placed in place of a removed fragment of skull bone. It has 64 electrodes immersed in the brain matter through which signals are exchanged. Communication is two-way, 1024-channel, and the chip itself contains tools to connect to third-party devices and exchange data with them.

Researchers from the Spanish research centre IMDEA Materials Institute, together with air filter manufacturer Venfilter, have developed a solution that can destroy microbes while filtering indoor air. The opRetimal substance for this is active metal oxides, but there are many questions about the best form in which to use them. In the current experiment, the choice was given to a spray with metal nanoparticles.timal substance for this is active metal oxides, but there are many questions about the best form in which to use them. In the current experiment, the choice was given to a spray with metal nanoparticles.

The idea is to create a renewable coating on the inlet pathways of typical filters that will kill microorganisms. To do this, a spray is sprayed on the filter, approximately every few days, similar to household cleaners. To create a filter with a film of metal oxide is not commercially profitable – not all rooms need such protection, it is selective and the consumer himself determines the need for such costs.

Google has unveiled its new Lumiere AI for video creation. This is not a commercial product, but a research project to test innovative technologies. At the current stage, it has no restrictions imposed by legislation and social norms on the work of generative networks, and therefore the result is surprisingly good.

Lumiere is based on a “spatio-temporal U-net architecture” that forms the structure of the video throughout its entirety. This is fundamentally different from the classic approach where the AI generates the start and end frames and then tries to guess what to fill the space between them with. Lumiere creates videos that are only 5 seconds long, but they’re remarkably realistic – or surreal, depending on the initial settings.

With the Grill-X you can prepare a classic barbecue “with smoke” in any kitchen. According to the manufacturer Kiwamiyatei, the new grill gives food that special woody flavour that is characteristic of food cooked over real coals. The grill is not self-contained, but can be used in any oven or hob.

Structurally, the Grill-X consists of three components: an aluminium base, a steel lid and the cooker itself, on which the food is cooked. The secret of the grill lies in the plate’s coating of graphite, which, like charcoal, is made of carbon. It is the burning of the charcoal that gives the food its woody flavour – the same flavour that the heated coating gives to the meat.
